Actor J. Alphonse Nicholson, best known for his role in P-Valley, has been cast in a key recurring role in HBO’s highly anticipated drama Lanterns, based on the iconic Green Lantern DC Comics series. Nicholson joins a talented cast that includes series leads Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, as well as series regular Kelly MacDonald.
Lanterns, created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, follows the story of two intergalactic law enforcement officers, John Stewart (played by Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Chandler), as they delve into a dark mystery rooted on Earth. The pair investigates a murder that takes place in the American heartland, uncovering secrets that could change everything they know about the universe.
Nicholson will portray the younger version of John Stewart’s father, John Senior, bringing a key character to life in the series. The cast also includes Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, and Jason Ritter.
The eight-episode Lanterns is being produced by HBO in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. Chris Mundy serves as the showrunner, with Lindelof and King co-writing and executive producing. The first two episodes will be directed by James Hawes, who is also an executive producer on the project.
Nicholson’s previous work includes his notable role as Lil’ Murda on Starz’s P-Valley. He has also appeared in FX’s Clipped, Hulu’s White Men Can’t Jump, and Netflix’s Madam C.J. Walker, alongside Octavia Spencer. Additionally, Nicholson starred in Just Mercy with Michael B. Jordan and was featured in They Cloned Tyrone on Netflix. His stage credits include a role in A Soldier’s Play on Broadway, which won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
