by Barbara

Hulu’s highly anticipated adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments has officially secured its first director. Mike Barker, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker known for his work on The Handmaid’s Tale and Fargo, will direct the first three episodes of the series. In addition to his directorial role, Barker will also serve as an executive producer on the project, which is produced by MGM Television and is nearing its green light for production. Other directors for the series have yet to be announced.

Barker, a seasoned director, has helmed 12 episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, earning two Emmy nominations for his work. His impressive resume also includes the British crime drama Broadchurch, the acclaimed Fargo, and the upcoming thriller Malice starring David Duchovny, set to debut later this year on Prime Video.

The Testaments, a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is one of the most eagerly awaited TV projects currently in development. Based on Atwood’s 2019 Booker Prize-winning novel, the series follows the lives of three women—Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd), Agnes (Chase Infiniti), and Daisy (Lucy Halliday)—as they navigate the oppressive theocracy of Gilead more than 15 years after the events of the original story. As their paths intertwine, they uncover the secrets of Gilead and join the resistance against its tyrannical regime.

Ann Dowd, who earned critical acclaim and an Emmy for her portrayal of Aunt Lydia in the original series, will reprise her role. Halliday, known for Blue Jean, rounds out the main trio. Filming is expected to begin soon in Canada.
