Actor-turned-director Michael Shannon, known for his roles in The Shape of Water and The Bikeriders, takes the helm of his first feature film, Eric LaRue. This emotional drama, featuring Judy Greer and Alexander Skarsgård, delves into complex and heavy themes surrounding grief, guilt, and the aftermath of a violent act.
The film centers on Janice (Greer), a mother grappling with the devastating consequences of her son’s actions after he murders three classmates at his high school. As Janice moves through life in a fog of anger and frustration, she struggles to reconcile her emotions. Despite her husband’s (Skarsgård) attempt to find solace in a new church, Janice is unable to find comfort in her faith, even as her pastor urges her to meet with the mothers of her son’s victims in an effort to heal.
Eric LaRue explores the emotional aftermath of violence, urging audiences to witness the deep and far-reaching effects of such tragedies. As Janice contemplates whether this meeting could offer healing, the film examines how communities are irrevocably changed in the wake of violent acts.
Based on Brett Neveu’s play, which he also adapted into the screenplay for the film, Eric LaRue also stars Alison Pill, Paul Sparks, and Tracy Letts.
Having worked with renowned directors throughout his acting career, Shannon brings his experiences to this powerful and poignant debut film. Early indications suggest that he has crafted a thought-provoking and impactful cinematic experience.
