Sony Delays “Street Fighter” and Shifts “Shiver” to 2026

by Barbara

Sony has made significant adjustments to its upcoming film slate, removing the highly anticipated Street Fighter adaptation, produced by Legendary, from its 2026 release calendar. Initially slated for a March 20, 2026 debut, the film’s future remains uncertain. Additionally, Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller, Beneath the Storm—now retitled Shiver—has been pushed from August 2025 to July 2026, a strategic move aimed at aligning the film with the summer blockbuster season.

The Street Fighter adaptation, co-produced by Capcom, the Japanese video game developer behind the iconic franchise, and Legendary, which acquired the TV and film rights to the series in 2023, has yet to reveal specific details. Information regarding the plot, cast, director, and writers remains under wraps, leaving fans and industry insiders awaiting further announcements.

This film marks the latest attempt to bring the legendary game franchise to the big screen. The first Street Fighter adaptation, produced by Universal in 1994, starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen, and Raul Julia but was met with critical and commercial disappointment. A 2009 spin-off, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, produced by 20th Century Fox and starring Kristin Kreuk, also failed to perform well at the box office and with critics.

Meanwhile, Shiver, formerly known as Beneath the Storm, will see a delay of nearly a year, now set for release in July 2026. The shift in release date aims to place the thriller during a more competitive time for summer blockbusters. Though plot details are being kept secret, the film boasts a talented cast, including Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton, Fair Play), Whitney Peak (Gossip Girl, Hocus Pocus 2), and Djimon Hounsou (Rebel Moon, A Quiet Place: Day One). The film is produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.

Wirkola, known for directing films such as Spermageddon, Violent Night, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and What Happened to Monday, brings his unique vision to Shiver, a film that promises to add a thrilling new chapter to his growing filmography.
