Searchlight Pictures has announced the release of The Roses, a dark comedy starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, set to hit theaters on August 29. Directed by Jay Roach, known for Bombshell and Meet the Parents, the film is written by Tony McNamara, the mind behind Poor Things and The Great.
The Roses draws inspiration from the 1989 classic The War of the Roses, based on Warren Adler’s novel. The film follows Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch), a seemingly perfect couple with successful careers, a loving marriage, and well-adjusted children. However, beneath the surface of their ideal life, tension brews as Theo’s career falters while Ivy’s ambitions soar, leading to a fierce rivalry and simmering resentment.
In addition to Cumberbatch and Colman, the film features a stellar cast, including Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow, and Kate McKinnon. Roach, alongside producers Michelle Graham, Ed Sinclair, and Tom Carver, brings the project to life. Cumberbatch also serves as a producer through his SunnyMarch banner, joined by partners Adam Ackland and Leah Clarke.
Matthew Greenfield, President of Searchlight Pictures, praised the film as “wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human,” highlighting the star-studded team behind it. “With Jay at the helm, and Benedict and Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life,” Greenfield said in a statement.
The original War of the Roses, directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, was released by 20th Century Fox in 1989. The film, known for its dark humor and sharp dialogue, received numerous accolades, including one BAFTA and three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Comedy.
