Music Box Films has released the official trailer for Ghost Trail (Les Fantômes), a gripping French thriller set to debut in select U.S. theaters this May. The film, which first premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Critics’ Week sidebar, presents a tense and thought-provoking narrative centered around a Syrian man’s quest for justice and revenge.
Starring Adam Bessa, Ghost Trail follows the harrowing journey of Hamid, a Syrian man who, after enduring torture at the hands of the Assad regime in Sednaya Prison, seeks out his former captor in France. As Hamid becomes part of a secret group tracking down Syrian regime leaders who have fled to Europe, his mission takes him deep into the world of espionage. In pursuit of his torturer, Hamid faces a dangerous path filled with ethical dilemmas surrounding justice and vengeance.
The film’s narrative dives into the complexities of retribution as Hamid, now living in exile, works as a literature professor. He joins a covert team that uses multiplayer video games to relay life-or-death missions targeting those who perpetrated atrocities in Syria. Tensions rise as Hamid becomes obsessed with locating the man he believes is his torturer, putting his relationships and sense of self at risk.
Directed by Jonathan Millet, known for his works Tell Me About the Stars and The Wake, Ghost Trail offers a chilling exploration of trauma, justice, and the moral ambiguities of revenge. The film also stars Tawfeek Barhom, Julia Franz Richter, and Hala Rajab. Through this haunting narrative, Millet sensitively engages with recent history, portraying the personal and political ramifications of seeking justice in a foreign land.
Ghost Trail will be released in U.S. theaters on May 30th, 2025, and has already been showcased at several prestigious film festivals, including London, Stockholm, and Chicago.
