Julie Delpy Joins Ruben Östlund’s ‘The Entertainment System Is Down’

Julie Delpy has been confirmed to star in Ruben Östlund’s highly anticipated film The Entertainment System Is Down, joining an ensemble cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Keanu Reeves, Nicholas Braun, Tobias Menzies, Connor Swindells, Daniel Webber, Wayne Blair, Dan Wyllie, Lindsay Duncan, Allan Corduner, Sofia Tjelta Sydness, Erin Ainsworth, Myles Kamwendo, Elle Piper, Thibaud Dooms, Sanna Sundqvist, Tea Stjärne, Swedish artist Benjamin Ingrosso, and Sanjeev Bhaskar.

Östlund, a two-time Palme d’Or winner, brings his signature dark satire to the screen in this intriguing project. The film is set aboard a long-haul flight from England to Australia, where an in-flight entertainment system malfunctions, leading passengers to confront the terrifying prospect of boredom. Östlund’s previous works, Triangle of Sadness (2022) and The Square (2017), earned him significant acclaim, with Triangle of Sadness securing a second Palme d’Or win.

Delpy, known for her work in both American and European cinema, recently wrapped production on Matt Charman’s Netflix limited series The Choice, where she portrays the French President. The actress, who first appeared at the age of 14 in Jean-Luc Godard’s Detective, has enjoyed a varied career. Notable roles include starring in Killing Zoe, Three Colors: Blue, White and Red, and Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, alongside Ethan Hawke. She earned Academy Award nominations for her screenwriting work on Before Sunset and Before Midnight.

Delpy is also recognized for her directorial work, having written, directed, and starred in 2 Days in Paris and 2 Days in New York. Other credits include appearances in Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers, Lasse Hallström’s The Hoax, and Avengers: Age of Ultron directed by Joss Whedon. She has also received multiple nominations for the prestigious César Awards.

Her most recent project, Meet the Barbarians, which she wrote, directed, and starred in, premiered at TIFF and will be featured as the opening night film at the Miami Film Festival on April 3.

The Entertainment System Is Down is produced by Sweden’s Plattform Produktion, Germany’s Essential Films, and France’s Parisienne de Production. Co-producers include BBC Film, Film i Väst, Sveriges Television, ARTE France Cinéma, ZDF/ARTE, SF Studios, Eye Eye Pictures (Norway), Paloma Productions (Denmark), and Good Chaos (UK). The film is financed by the Swedish Film Institute, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and the Norwegian and Danish Film Institutes, among others, with support from Canal+, Disney+, and ARTE France. The film’s world sales are handled by Coproduction Office, and A24 has already secured U.S. distribution rights.
