Supercars driver Thomas Randle will soon be seen showcasing his unexpected musical talents in the upcoming ABC TV series The Piano. The six-part series, which will premiere in May, focuses on “everyday Australians” who are extraordinary piano players. Randle makes an appearance in the show’s trailer, signaling his involvement in this exciting musical venture.
The unique series invites talented pianists to perform at iconic locations around Australia, giving them the opportunity to display their skills in public spaces, captivating audiences of shoppers, commuters, and passersby. However, there’s more to the show than meets the eye. Beneath the public performances, a hidden competition element unfolds.
The pianists are unaware that their performances are being observed by two renowned musical experts—multi-award-winning Harry Connick Jr. and Australian classical pianist Andrea Lam. These experts have been tasked with selecting a pianist from each location to mentor, preparing them for a life-changing performance at one of Australia’s most prestigious venues, the Sydney City Recital Hall.
Randle, known for his driving skills with Tickford Racing, has long impressed his Supercars fans with his musical abilities. His Instagram is filled with videos of him playing various tunes, but it was his memorable performance on the Pit Lane Live TV show during the 2019 Bathurst 1000 that really brought his musical talents to the forefront. Since then, he was even invited to record a solo version of the Formula 1 theme song for Fox Sports’ coverage of the 2024 Australian Grand Prix.
The Piano was filmed in Sydney and Melbourne in the latter half of 2024 and is based on a format that originally debuted in the UK in 2023. Described as “The Great British Bake Off for pianos,” the Australian version promises a mix of talent, surprise, and competition.
The series will premiere on ABC on Sunday, May 4th, at 7:30 PM, with all six episodes available on ABC’s iview streaming platform.
