Finn Wolfhard’s ‘Hell of a Summer’ Slasher Set for April 4 Release

by Barbara

Actor Finn Wolfhard, known for his roles in Stranger Things and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, is set to make his feature directorial debut with the upcoming horror-comedy Hell of a Summer. Co-directed with Billy Bryk, who also starred in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 4, 2025, following its distribution deal with NEON last summer.

Hell of a Summer had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, where JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray rated it a 5/10. The film has since garnered attention for its retro-themed promotional posters. Earlier this week, a new poster was unveiled, inspired by the 1981 slasher Happy Birthday to Me. Now, Bloody Disgusting has shared an additional retro-style poster, this time a tribute to the 1980 slasher classic Prom Night, created by Creepy Duck Design.

The film is set at Camp Pineway, where a group of camp counselors is preparing for the arrival of campers. However, their night takes a terrifying turn as a masked killer begins targeting the staff. Wolfhard and Bryk, who wrote and starred in the film, have described it as a horror-comedy-slasher aimed at subverting Gen Z stereotypes.

The cast features Fred Hechinger (from Fear Street), who plays the lead role of Jason Hochberg, a camp counselor caught in a deadly game of survival. The ensemble also includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), Abby Quinn (Mad About You), and Pardis Saremi (Career Opportunities in Murder and Mayhem).

Hell of a Summer was financed by 30West, with executive producers including Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, Drew Brennan, and Jay Van Hoy. Filming took place in Ontario, Canada, adding a chilly backdrop to the film’s slasher narrative.

As anticipation grows, Hell of a Summer seems poised to bring a fresh, nostalgic twist to the slasher genre. Fans of Wolfhard’s previous work and retro horror will not want to miss it.
