HBO’s eagerly anticipated DC series Lanterns has cast Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, one of the prominent Green Lanterns featured in the show. This marks a return to the iconic role for Fillion, who has portrayed various Green Lanterns in several animated films over the past decade.
Fillion’s voice first brought Hal Jordan, another Green Lantern, to life in the 2011 animated feature Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. His portrayal continued in subsequent films, including Justice League: Doom (2012), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013), Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (2015), The Death of Superman (2018), and Reign of the Supermen (2019). All of these titles were direct-to-DVD releases.
In 2023, Fillion expanded his Green Lantern roles when he was cast as Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s upcoming live-action Superman film, set for release this July.
The Lanterns series, which explores the intergalactic police force of the Green Lantern Corps, stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The official plot synopsis reveals a dark, earth-based mystery as the two Lanterns investigate a murder in the American Midwest. Additional cast members include Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen.
Chris Mundy serves as the showrunner, working alongside Damon Lindelof and Tom King, who co-wrote the pilot. The trio executive produces the series alongside James Gunn, Peter Safran, Ron Schmidt, and James Hawes, who is directing the first two episodes. Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov will also direct. Production for Lanterns began in February.
