Sydney Sweeney is nearing a deal to star in the highly anticipated live-action Gundam film, currently in development at Legendary Entertainment.
Though specifics about the character Sweeney will portray remain undisclosed, and the film’s plot is under wraps, industry insiders have expressed excitement about her involvement. Representatives for Legendary declined to provide any comments.
The Gundam movie, which will be co-developed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks, will be helmed by Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle. Mickle, who also penned the script, will produce the film alongside his partner Linda Moran under their production company, Nightshade.
The Gundam franchise, a cornerstone of the “mecha” sci-fi genre known for its iconic giant fighting robots, debuted with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979. Over the years, it has become a multimillion-dollar franchise, earning over $600 million annually, including from a robust merchandise line. The upcoming film will mark the franchise’s first live-action adaptation.
Legendary Entertainment first announced its plans to develop a Gundam film in 2021, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts initially attached as director. Vogt-Roberts, who worked with the studio on Kong: Skull Island, has since stepped down from the project, with Mickle taking the reins.
Sweeney, known for her breakout role in Euphoria, has recently starred in the horror film Immaculate and the TIFF-premiering thriller Eden by Ron Howard. She has an exciting slate ahead, with roles in Apple’s upcoming thriller Echo Valley, a biopic about boxer Christy Martin, Euphoria Season 3, and several other projects including The Housemaid and Scandalous!
