Lucasfilm has officially announced the upcoming release of Tales of the Underworld, a new animated anthology series set to debut on Disney+ on May 4, just in time for Star Wars Day celebrations. The announcement was made alongside the first trailer and an official poster, showcasing a thrilling new chapter in the Star Wars universe.
The new series, created by Dave Filoni, is the latest addition to the Tales anthology, following Tales of the Jedi (2022) and Tales of the Empire (2024). This time, the focus shifts to the criminal underworld of the galaxy, exploring the complex lives of two iconic villains: Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane.
“Tales of the Underworld” will consist of six animated shorts, each featuring three episodes centered on both Ventress and Bane. The narrative will delve deeper into their backstories and present new challenges, with Ventress receiving a “new chance at life” and teaming up with an unexpected ally. Meanwhile, Bane confronts his past when he faces an old friend who now serves as a Marshal on the opposite side of the law.
Set to debut on May 4, Tales of the Underworld will follow the premiere of Andor Season 2, which begins airing on April 22. The new series is scheduled to premiere between episodes 4-6 of Andor Season 2.
The series will bring back fan-favorite voice actors Nika Futterman and Corey Burton, who will reprise their roles as Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane, respectively. Additional cast members include Artt Butler, Lane Factor, AJ LoCascio, Clare Grant, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, and Eric Lopez.
Matt Michnovetz, who has previously written for The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Bad Batch, and Tales of the Empire, is credited as the writer for Tales of the Underworld. The shorts are expected to maintain the 14-19 minute runtime of previous Tales entries, providing concise but impactful storytelling.
The recently released trailer offers a glimpse into the series, featuring action-packed scenes such as Cad Bane engaging in a classic Western-style shootout with a former ally and Ventress facing off against a new Inquisitor wielding a red lightsaber. The trailer also teases a young Force-sensitive character joining forces with Ventress, hinting at intriguing new alliances.
Fans of The Clone Wars will also recognize Latts Razzi, a Theelin bounty hunter, who makes an appearance in the series’ promotional poster, marking a return for a character previously seen in the animated series.
As Tales of the Underworld prepares to land on Disney+, it promises to expand the rich Star Wars universe with captivating stories about the galaxy’s most notorious figures.
