Apple’s newest drama, Your Friends and Neighbors, marks a thrilling dive into the complexities of wealth, deceit, and human frailty, starring Jon Hamm in a role that shows off his multifaceted range. Renewed for a second season before the first even premiered, the series promises to offer a fresh perspective on the ever-popular narrative of the rich behaving badly—an angle that has already been explored in shows like Succession and Yellowstone. However, Your Friends and Neighbors takes a darker, more personal approach, focusing on the broken and vulnerable underbelly of the wealthy elite.
The show follows Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a hedge fund manager whose life unravels after being fired in disgrace and reeling from a recent divorce. Faced with mounting debts and child support obligations, Coop, played by Jon Hamm, resorts to petty theft from his affluent neighbors in Westmont Village, a ritzy neighborhood hiding dark secrets behind its luxurious façades. As Coop spirals deeper into moral decay, he discovers that the lives of the people around him may be even more fractured than his own.
The series sets the stage with a gripping opening: Coop wakes up with a head wound next to a dead body, with no idea how he got there. A voice-over narration from Hamm adds a noir flavor to the unfolding drama, providing flashbacks to Coop’s once-successful life. We learn about his failed marriage, estranged family, and the growing pressures of his personal and professional life, which ultimately lead to his criminal descent. His former business partner, Barney Choi (Hoon Lee), urges him to find a way to support his ex-wife Mel (Amanda Peet), their daughter Tori (Isabel Gravitt), son Hunter (Donovan Colan), and mentally ill sister Ali (Lena Hall). Struggling to make ends meet, Coop resorts to stealing from his wealthy neighbors, ultimately enlisting Elena Benavides (Aimee Carrero), a worker in the employ of the neighborhood elite, to help him execute his crimes without detection.
While the focus is on Coop’s journey, Your Friends and Neighbors also explores the perspectives of Elena and the police investigating the thefts, led by Rebecca Lin (Sandrine Holt). Elena, as a character, represents the underappreciated workforce that sustains the lifestyles of the wealthy, providing a poignant commentary on social class divides that isn’t often explored in shows that examine the lives of the rich.
The series is written and created by Jonathan Tropper, known for his work on Banshee, Warrior, and See, and while it could be tempting to compare it to Hamm’s previous role in Mad Men, this is a very different show. Here, Hamm’s portrayal of Coop is layered with intensity and a sense of desperation, turning every moment of dialogue into something memorable. Alongside him, Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn, playing his ex-wife and lover, respectively, offer compelling performances as women navigating mid-life with a keen awareness of the superficial world they inhabit.
Tropper’s sharp writing, combined with the direction of Craig Gillespie, known for I, Tonya and Cruella, brings a fresh and captivating energy to this show. The first two episodes set a gritty tone, with Gillespie’s knack for twisting ordinary moments into something uniquely dramatic. His direction, paired with Tropper’s character-driven storytelling, captures the tension between the affluent residents of Westmont Village and the underclass they often overlook.
Your Friends and Neighbors explores the darker side of wealth and privilege, offering both a biting critique and an intimate portrait of a man trying to reconcile with his past and present. With its stellar ensemble cast, the series delves into themes of family, insecurity, and the hidden lives of the wealthy, ultimately questioning what it means to have it all and yet still feel empty inside.
Premiering on Apple TV+ on April 11th, Your Friends and Neighbors is a thought-provoking, character-driven drama that is as engaging as it is darkly comedic. Even if you don’t find yourself captivated by the show’s critique of the ultra-rich, its sharp writing, strong performances, and intriguing premise are sure to make an impact.
