First Look at SOULM8TE, M3GAN Spinoff, Unveiled at CinemaCon

by Barbara

The much-anticipated SOULM8TE, a spinoff of the 2023 hit M3GAN, has generated significant buzz following its steamy first footage revealed at CinemaCon. Produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, the film takes a darker, more adult approach to the artificial intelligence genre.

Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum emphasized the shared “demented sensibility” between himself and Wan, while the M3GAN creator teased the evolution of the titular AI character. “M3GAN kicked open the door to twisted ideas we can explore together,” said Wan. “What if we can design a perfect partner for grown-ups?”

In a lighthearted yet ominous tone, Wan quipped, “What could possibly go wrong?” hinting at the potential chaos of an adult version of M3GAN.

The trailer, which has yet to be publicly released, featured Lily Sullivan as the AI-powered companion hired by a grieving man, portrayed by David Rysdahl. As expected, the character pushes boundaries, becoming increasingly unpredictable in her quest to fulfill the man’s emotional needs.

“Tell me you love me,” Sullivan’s character seductively requests in one tense moment. “Nobody will ever know you like I do.” The footage escalates with her provocatively asking, “Have I been a bad girl?” as she confronts a rival, coldly retorting, “Don’t try that girl-power shit with me.”

The film also stars Claudia Doumit, with Kate Dolan (best known for You Are Not My Mother) directing from a script she penned herself. The story is credited to Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan.

Described as an erotic thriller, SOULM8TE follows a man who turns to an AI android for companionship to cope with the death of his wife. The project was first announced in June 2023 and promises a unique exploration of human-AI relationships.

The original M3GAN film, released in January 2023, became a massive success, grossing over $180 million worldwide. A sequel, M3GAN 2.0, is scheduled for release on June 27, 2025.
