“Home Sweet Home” – A Demon Invasion in Bangkok

by Barbara

In Home Sweet Home, square-jawed cop Jake (William Moseley, now all grown up from his role as Peter in the Narnia movies) arrives in Bangkok with his wife Prang (Urassaya Sperbund) and their young daughter Loo (Akeira Hadden) to visit Prang’s mother. However, their peaceful family trip takes a dark turn when a demon breaks into the earthly realm, making its first appearance right in the heart of Bangkok. Chaos ensues, and the family quickly finds themselves fighting for survival in a city overrun by possession and mayhem.

The film, based on the popular Thai video game Home Sweet Home, starts with a series of slow, touristy scenes of Jake, Prang, and Loo exploring the city. It’s hard to ignore the possibility that the film’s production might have had some backing from a tourism board, given its focus on showcasing the sights of Bangkok. However, the action picks up when Jake attempts to kill a possessed antagonist, Mek (Michele Morrone, who offers a fun performance), in a shopping mall. This moment marks the start of the chaos as half the population of Bangkok is suddenly possessed, turning the city into a battleground.

Separated from Jake in the ensuing pandemonium, Prang and Loo must navigate the city on a municipal bus, trying to avoid being murdered by the throngs of demon-possessed citizens. Meanwhile, a massive, fire-breathing CGI demon makes its slow march through the urban landscape, adding to the apocalyptic chaos. The film’s 93-minute runtime hurtles toward an absurd, yet fitting conclusion.

Directors Steffen Hacker and Alexander Kiesl, along with uncredited screenwriters, blend various mythologies—ranging from paganism and Buddhism to classic Hollywood horror tropes—into the plot. While the result may not be visually stunning or deeply original, Home Sweet Home offers a high-energy, genre-driven experience that holds its ground. Urassaya Sperbund’s performance as Prang is a solid highlight, giving the film a sense of credibility amid the madness.
