Warner Bros. has announced plans to remake the 1992 hit film The Bodyguard, originally starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. The new version will be directed by Sam Wrench, known for his work on Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, with the script written by Jonathan A. Abrams, the screenwriter behind Juror No. 2.
The news was confirmed in an interview with Warner Bros. co-film heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. While no casting decisions have been made yet, the remake has the potential to attract an exciting ensemble, following the success of the original film, which grossed $411 million worldwide and earned two Oscar nominations. Given the film’s popularity, the casting of the new singing star is expected to be a major talking point.
The original film followed Frank Farmer, a former Secret Service agent played by Costner, who becomes the bodyguard to Rachel Marron, a famous R&B singer portrayed by Houston. The movie combined drama, romance, and thriller elements, with Farmer protecting Marron from a dangerous stalker. The film’s soundtrack, which featured hits like “I Will Always Love You” and “I Have Nothing,” became the best-selling album of all time by a female artist.
Sam Wrench, who directed Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which earned over $2 billion in ticket sales, brings a fresh perspective to the project. Jonathan A. Abrams, who made his screenwriting debut with Juror No. 2, will provide the script for the remake.
Warner Bros. is also working on other high-profile reboots, including new installments of The Matrix and Beetlejuice, as well as revivals of Gremlins and Goonies. The studio is focused on selecting directors and projects that align with its intellectual properties, while also exploring original content.
The remake of The Bodyguard joins a growing trend of revamping iconic films and franchises, with the goal of attracting both old fans and new audiences.
