A new version of the 2016 shark thriller The Shallows has surfaced, this time with a Chinese twist. The Chinese remake, titled The Shallows (also known as 鲨滩 in Mandarin), has just released its official trailer. Like the original, the story follows a surfer, but this version introduces some modern technological updates, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR).
The plot of the remake remains largely similar to the American film. It centers on a girl who loves extreme sports. While surfing alone at a remote beach, she is suddenly attacked by a massive shark. The role of the surfer, originally played by Blake Lively in the 2016 film, is now portrayed by Chinese actress Xiaoyun Chen. The cast also includes Sinan Li, Sen Wang, and Peng Bi Yao.
Directed by Banchang Xia, the remake blends the original survival thriller elements with a sci-fi twist. The introduction of AI and VR adds a new layer to the storyline, as the protagonist replays the terrifying shark attack scenario. Early reviews have described the film as entertaining, with a particularly thrilling and bloody opening sequence. Clocking in at 73 minutes, the movie promises a fast-paced and exciting experience.
The Shallows debuted online in China in January 2025, but its international release is yet to be confirmed. This remake comes after other Chinese adaptations of American films, such as the Sharktopus remake, which added unique twists to the original story.
