Britney Spears Reflects on Memorable VMAs Snake Moment: ‘Still Remember the Thrill’

by Barbara

Around the turn of the millennium, Britney Jean Spears was a central figure at the MTV Video Music Awards.

As the annual awards show approaches next Tuesday and with her memoir set to be released later this fall, Spears took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to revisit a cherished moment.

“I can’t forget one of my cherished performances with an albino python,” the “Piece of Me” singer shared. “I recall the excitement and nerves that coursed through me as I held that snake and stepped onto the stage!!! I delve deeper into this performance and other favorites in my upcoming book, ‘Unveiling My Truth.’ I’m eager for you to explore it on Oct. 24.”

After her debut VMA performance in 1999, where she shared the stage with fellow teen sensations *NSYNC, Spears returned solo the following year – more mature, poised, and alluring. She performed “Oops!…I Did It Again” and delivered a rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction.”

However, it was in 2001 that Spears solidified her reign as the Queen of the VMA stage, accompanied by a massive python and a contagious hit produced by The Neptunes.

“I’m a Slave 4 U,” also penned by the production duo of Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams, enjoyed moderate success upon its release, peaking at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Yet, in the vast realm of Britney’s chart-topping hits, it stands as a timeless classic. Much of its enduring appeal can be attributed to her unforgettable 2001 VMA performance.

Having reached new heights in 2001, Spears opted out of performing at the 2002 event but returned in 2003 alongside Christina Aguilera and Madonna for an equally, if not more, unforgettable VMA performance.

While there may never be a moment as instantly iconic as Britney with her python, artists will undoubtedly strive to leave their mark when the MTV VMAs return on Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT.
