Nickelback, a band known for both their success and polarizing reception, candidly discusses the challenges they’ve faced during their enduring two-decade career in the documentary “From the Shadows to the Spotlight,” which premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
Ryan Peake, one of the band members, opens up about the widespread criticism they’ve encountered over the years, saying, “No one starts playing the guitar to become the most controversial band in the world. It’s not a great feeling.”
In a poignant moment, Peake’s children briefly appear in the film to share how the band’s reception has affected them. Peake’s son, Dax, reflects, “People used to have a strong dislike for the band, and by extension, for us.”
Mike Kroeger, the brother of lead singer Chad Kroeger, acknowledges that the early days were tough, with the documentary shedding light on the band’s struggles, including internet memes poking fun at everything from their music to Chad’s hairstyle. Mike also mentions that Chad took the criticism to heart initially, describing him as having “thin skin.”
Drummer Daniel Adair recounts an incident during a previous tour when Chad became visibly upset over the backlash, and Adair himself experienced people yelling insults from passing cars.
Mike suggests that some of the criticism may stem from the band’s lyrical content, but he stands by their discography, recognizing that sometimes audiences simply want to enjoy catchy, lighthearted tunes on the radio.
Chad Kroeger sums up his perspective in the film, stating, “I perform Nickelback songs for Nickelback fans. I don’t need to win anyone over.”
Directed by Leigh Brooks, “From the Shadows to the Spotlight” also chronicles the band’s remarkable journey from playing small venues in Canada to headlining sold-out arenas worldwide. The documentary touches on several emotional challenges, including the departure of former band member Ryan Vikedal, Mike’s near-fatal stroke, and Adair’s determination to continue despite a daunting neurological condition.
